A way of life
By Jaime Parada
It has been said that all deadlines eventually arrive. We are only seven days away from a unique experience. We are going to see the results of three years of planning, negotiations, and an intense convocation work.
From October 15th to the 21st, Monterrey will literally be the capital of knowledge. No other city in the world has ever convened those who study, promote, implement, and evaluate knowledge management as a driver of integral development.
The Global Week on Knowledge Based Development, which is part of the Universal Forum of Cultures Monterrey 2007, will give us the opportunity to explore, share, and gather the best from each experience.
A gathering of this nature, which brings together about 200 talented specialists from 30 countries, is the ideal forum for the free exchange of ideas, experiences, and visions.
We all have something to share and much to learn. Regarding the Monterrey, International City of Knowledge Program (Mtycic), we have achieved great progress in the area of both national and international links.
One of our strengths is that the private sector, the academic sector, and the government have formed a solid alliance to promote applied research, which is one of the transforming factors of quality of life in a country.
It is true that a knowledge city should generate comprehensive development. It can neither be satisfied with favoring science and technology nor limit itself to search for economic growth.
However, economic wellbeing is the starting point for improvement in other areas, such as education, health, safety, recreation, culture, and family and social integration.
The Global Week on Knowledge Based Development will open up new perspectives for the advancement of the consolidation of Monterrey as an International City of Knowledge, a priority project to evolve with sustainability.

MONTERREY: WORLD CAPITAL OF KNOWLEDGE
For seven days, 200 specialists from 30 countries will discuss "Knowledge Based Development." This is the first time so much talent is brought together to define a global agenda on priority issues.
The main characters of the world's most important projects on knowledge management will share their experiences in a unique event.
The Global Week on Knowledge Based Development is an historical event because it brings together practitioners, governments, academicians, financial institutions, consultants, students, and anyone who considers knowledge as the triggering factor for integral sustainable development.
The meeting, which will take place at Cintermex, October 15-21, is part of the activities of the Universal Forum of Cultures Monterrey 2007.
The Monterrey, International City of Knowledge Program (Mtycic) will present proposals in several of the activities and is a member of the sponsors' committee.
"We have scheduled 100 events, and each one has an audience profile. There will be activities for workers, families, students, academicians, professionals, entrepreneurs, scientists, public administrators and housewives," explained Francisco Javier Carrillo, Chairman of the International Organizing Committee.
The idea is to share methods, techniques, and experiences on understanding, managing, and assessing knowledge cities and knowledge based development.
"We expect to initiate a multidisciplinary, interinstitutional, and multiregional dialogue because the "cream of the crop" on the subject is coming to be with us," pointed out Carrillo, who is also the Director of the Monterrey Tech Knowledge System.
The week includes five macroevents: Forum Dialogues, First Summit on Knowledge Cities, Annual Meeting of Local Networks of Global Compact, Fifth Assembly of the Latin American Community of Knowledge Systems, and the presentation of MAKCi Awards for the first time.
The opening of the Knowledge Cities Summit, scheduled for Wednesday, October 17 th, will be presided by the State Governor, Mr. Natividad Gonzalez-Paras, who will be accompanied by Jaime Parada-Avila, General Director of the Mtycic Program.
Carillo explained that the groups who will convene from all over the world are doing the difficult part of the work, which is social accounting. "They are the ones who record and evaluate intangible assets, the ones who study the new economy and give names to things."
The cases of Finland, New Zealand, Australia, and Singapore will be presented. They are countries that have a comprehensive vision of what a knowledge city should be.
"Regarding Latin America, there are interesting experiences in Colombia, Guatemala, and Panama," explained the executive, who has been involved in the organization of the event for the last three years.
The Monterrey case will be presented on Saturday, October 20 th. "We are going to present a report on the progress of the System of Capitals of the city. It is not a finished product; it is a reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of the community. It is the foundation for working with a vision for the future," stated Carrillo.
He added that the objective is for people to present their vision of what a knowledge city is or should be.
After one week of seminars, workshops, conferences, round tables, and debates, there will be a plenary session to put together a global agenda of priority issues.
